We set up a charity called suubi providing medical care to people in Busu and the nearby Villages in Uganda
'Suubi' means 'hope' in the Lusoga language, spoken by people in Busu village in the Iganga region of Uganda.
Suubi Medical Clinic was started in response to the desperate situation of the people in Busu. Denis was born and brought up in the village, so he knew that many children die before their 10th birthday, often of treatable diseases like malaria.
Denis himself has lost cousins and neighbours who died at an early age. Denis and Lorraine felt a strong sense of responsibility to the community that Denis grew up in and started to build the clinic in 2003 using local labour and materials whenever possible.
What is health like in Busu? Malaria is a major cause of illness and death in the village. Tetanus and typhoid are also killers. Occasionally, snake and insect bites can lead to death too. There is a high level of maternity-linked deaths as well, both of mothers and babies, sometimes due to AIDS.
What Suubi Clinic does!
The clinic focuses mainly on primary health care and particularly:
- Provide basic medial and dental care services2
- Essential maternal and childhood care
- Promote safe water use and improving nutrition
- Teach life-saving and first aid skills to the people in the village
- Run village workshops on adolescent health and counselling
- Education and help for sexually transmitted infections including HIV/AIDS and reproductive health cancers (breast and cervical)
- Promote sexual and reproductive health awareness and family planning
- Improve personal hygiene and promote healthy lifestyles
- Encourage the construction and use of pit latrines in the village.
